As a rule, your child should have a checkup every six months (just like you!). Your dentist can give you specific guidance based on your child\u2019s personal oral health. You should schedule the first visit when the first tooth appears, or around his first birthday, whichever comes first.<\/p>\n
Absolutely! Just because they\u2019re temporary, that doesn\u2019t mean baby teeth aren\u2019t important. They help your child smile, speak, and chew, and they help ensure proper spacing for the permanent teeth when they\u2019re ready to erupt.<\/p>\n Cavities are caused by bacteria that metabolize the sugars in food and produce acids that erode tooth enamel (same as in adults). You can help your child avoid cavities by seeing that she brushes twice-daily and flosses daily.<\/p>\n Actually, you can start even before he has teeth by cleaning his gums with a soft infant toothbrush or cloth and water. As baby teeth erupt, smear a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste on them twice a day and brush them with an appropriately sized toothbrush.<\/p>\n When the child is three to six years old use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Make sure the child spits out excess toothpaste. Your child can start brushing on his own as soon as he\u2019s physically capable and responsible enough. This usually happens around six or seven.<\/p>\n When your child has two teeth that touch, you should begin daily flossing.<\/p>\n If a permanent tooth gets knocked out, handle it by the crown of the tooth; do not touch the root. If you can, put the tooth back in the socket.
