What Are the Differences between the Major Brands of Toothpaste?

Together, Crest and Colgate make up for 70% of toothpaste sales, according to the Wall Street Journal. But what exactly are the differences between these two toothpaste giants? Here’s a closer look at these popular brands of toothpaste:

Crest Toothpaste

  • Crest toothpaste is made by consumer goods company, Procter & Gamble, which was founded in 1837. Crest was introduced to the market in 1955 and produced the first fluoride toothpaste to be approved by the American Dental Association. In recent years, Crest has made large strides with its introduction of Crest Pro Health, an all-encompassing toothpaste that is highly recommended by dentists. Crest is known for being on top of the latest toothpaste technologies.

Colgate Toothpaste

  • Colgate is, in fact, the leading brand of toothpaste when it comes to market share. Its parent company, Colgate-Palmolive, holds 4% of the toothpaste market share. Colgate-Palmolive began in 1806 as a starch, soap, and candle company, and is now known for its leading product, Colgate toothpaste, which was introduced in 1863. Colgate was the first to package toothpaste in the familiar collapsible tube in 1896. Colgate has produced consistently effective toothpaste for more than 150 years. It is brand loyalty and constant innovations that keeps this giant in the toothpaste game.

But brands of toothpaste aren’t just limited to Crest and Colgate. When you walk down the dental health aisle at the store, you may be overwhelmed by the expansive selection of toothpastes on the market today. Today, 93% of Americans use toothpaste.

So, now that nearly everyone understands the importance of using toothpaste, the manufacturers have shifted their focus to diversifying product lines. Brands now offer specialized toothpastes that aim to accomplish a specific goal, such as whitening teeth or decreasing tooth sensitivity. It’s these specialized products that clutter up the shelves.

Does Toothpaste Brand Matter?

Honestly, not really. The brand of toothpaste that you use will really not have any significant impact on your oral health. So long as you brush your teeth regularly with fluoride toothpaste, the brand of toothpaste won’t make much of a difference in the cleanliness of your teeth. If the tube that you’re contemplating buying has the American Dental Association seal of approval, you should be good to go.

Toothpaste formulas have come so far in recent years that almost every product will do a sufficient job of cleaning your teeth. Some brands may offer specialized toothpastes that address your specific dental concerns, such as allergies. If this is the case, one brand may offer more products to accommodate your special needs and may end up being the best toothpaste option.
