Technology inside a dentist office has changed dramatically over the years. But so has the technology in your pocket! Your smartphone can be an incredible tool to help you and your family perfect their dental habits. From better brushing to better understanding of dental procedures and conditions, learn about some of the best dental apps for patients.
Brush DJ
Properly brushing your teeth is more complicated than simply scrubbing your toothbrush across each tooth. For parents, it can be difficult to make sure your children are adequately cleaning their teeth each time they brush. Most research shows that it takes around two minutes of thorough brushing to remove most bacteria and plaque.
Brush DJ is a fun app that can help your children track their brushing time. Instead of using a timer, it plays a two-minute selection of music. And that’s not all: your child can play their favorite song through Brush DJ too!
But Brush DJ goes beyond the timer. It also comes packed with a few extra features that help your family stay on top of their dental health. The app can be set to remind you to:
- Brush twice a day
- Floss each day
- Use mouth rinse
- Visit your dentist for regular checkups
This award-winning app can be an incredible tool to help your child of any age brush their way to a brighter smile.
BoneBox™ Dental Lite
It’s often difficult for patients to understand dental procedures, despite their dentist’s best attempts to explain them. BoneBox™ is a free educational app that presents real-time, 3D visuals of the mouth. Used primarily as an educational tool for medical students, the app is effective for patient education as well.
The incredibly detailed 3D models can be fully controlled. You can zoom, rotate and even tap on models. For many, it allows you to go into greater detail. You can start by looking at a model of the mouth, then tap on each individual tooth to learn more.
Everything included in BoneBox™ Dental Lite was developed by a professional team of anatomists, certified medical illustrators and programmers that used real CT images. The authenticity helps medical students around the world – and can help you understand your dentist visits.
Dental Dictionary
While BoneBox™ Dental Lite helps you visualize what your dentist is talking about, the Dental Dictionary app can help explain it. Like any medical field, dentistry is full of technical terminology that can make simple procedures or severe diseases hard to understand. The Dental Dictionary includes photos and definitions for over 18,000 topics.
It contains information for almost every relevant subject in dentistry, including:
- Treatments
- Diseases & Their Causes
- Oral Hygiene
- Dental Tools
That means if you ever need a root canal, or want to find out more about dental implants, you have another resource to turn to.
To make things easier, it has a search function that can be activated with your phone’s voice search. With over 11,000 audio pronunciations, you can use it to help you start a conversation with your dentist about potential worries you may have.
If you have questions regarding your dental treatment, the Dental Dictionary is a great place to start. Of course, none of this information compares to asking your dentist. But it’s a fantastic supplementary tool to have when you need some more information between visits.
Brush Up
Like Brush DJ, Brush Up is a helpful app that’s both educational and fun. It trains your child to not only brush for a full two minutes, it also helps them focus on each area of the mouth. Using a 3D-animated character named Budd and your phone’s front camera, your child can see themselves brushing to match the ways Budd brushes on screen.
Backed by research, Brush Up has been shown to improve the quality of brushing by children that use it regularly. Many children ignore certain areas of the mouth, such as inner surfaces or more difficult to reach biting surfaces. After using Brush Up, participants showed more patience, moderation and variation in their brushing.
The Selfie Assessment helps children understand their brushing and areas they need to improve. The app can even send messages to you about how well your child brushed. Because dental health is so important for everyone, especially children, this monitoring can help your child avoid painful cavities.
